Last year, I was asked by one of my oldest friends Rob if I would help photograph him and his friends, in their World record attempt to play 169 hours of non-stop football. Yes you read that correctly, 169 hours of football! That's one week and one hour to be precise.
These boys weren't doing it just for fun (that would just be crazy!), they were doing it to raise money for an amazing charity called Kicking Off Against Cancer.
This wonderful charity was set up by one of it's founders Ben, who wanted to give something back to cancer charities when he heard his sister had been diagnosed with cancer for a second time. His first (crazy!) idea to raise money, was to attempt a 36 hour non-stop 6 a-side football match. The event was a tremendous success, raising over £13,000 for MacMillan, Cancer Research UK and Help for Heroes.
From this, he and some of his friends registered the charity Kicking Off Against Cancer, which helps and support those that are affected by cancer, by providing respite for people going through treatment and helping them make memories with the people closest to them. Having close family members myself who battled with cancer, I was humbled by these boys efforts to play non-stop football for 169 hours, and all in the aid of charity.
I photographed the first couple of hours of the game and arrived for the last couple of hours. To see them still giving it their all at the end was nothing short of amazing. In all the raised over £25,000 for their charity. Which was nothing short of outstanding.
A couple of months later I was again asked if I wouldn't mind attending their awards ceremony, which recognised not only the players, but the support they had as well, from volunteers, companies and people who cheered them on the sideline.
I'm so happy to have been able to help this amazing charity, and hope to be able to work with them again in the not so distant future, when I'm sure there will be another craze attempt up their sleeves. ;)
